EU announces new tribunal to prosecute Russia crimes of aggression from Ukraine war – JURIST

The EU Saturday agreed to determine a brand new tribunal to prosecute Russian crimes of aggression dedicated through the warfare in Ukraine. The tribunal, the Worldwide Middle for the Prosecution of Crimes of Aggression in opposition to Ukraine (ICPA), is designed to fill in any gaps in prosecution from the Worldwide Legal Court docket (ICC).

EU President Ursula von der Leyen introduced the tribunal, saying, “The European Union is supportive of the function of the Worldwide Legal Court docket. We additionally consider that there must be a devoted tribunal to prosecute Russia’s crime of aggression.”

Because it stands now, Russia has rejected the jurisdiction of the ICC, which means they may possible not topic themselves to any prosecution introduced within the ICC. The ICPA is designed to fill that hole by offering a discussion board for the prosecution of Russian crimes of aggression akin to torture, ill-treatment, sexual violence and abstract executions.

The ICPA can be housed within the Hague inside a joint investigative team, which was established in 2022. The workforce consists of Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine and the European Union Company for Legal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust). The investigative workforce agreed Saturday to amend their preliminary settlement to create the ICPA.

EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders applauded the tribunal, saying:

The announcement got here through the “United for Justice” convention in Ukraine.
