Russia arrests first US reporter on espionage charges since fall of Soviet Union – JURIST

A Russian court docket Thursday ordered the two-month detention of Wall Avenue Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich on costs of espionage.

Russian safety forces arrested Gershkovich in Yekaterinburg, Russia on Thursday morning on suspicions that the Moscow-based reporter was spying on Russia for the US. The Russian Federal Safety Service (FSB) instructed state-afilliated information supply TASS that they arrested Gershkovich for “appearing on the behest” of the US to gather “data constituting a state secret concerning the actions of an enterprise inside Russia’s military-industrial advanced.” The Wall Avenue Journal denies all allegations leveled in opposition to Gershkovich.

Gershkovich appeared earlier than the Lefortovsky District Court docket in Moscow, Russia on Thursday.
