Lawyer Leo P. Carey acknowledged that he made the comment on the Nov. 27 assembly however stated he isn’t a racist, Jolena Sims, the township supervisor, told MLive.com.
He provided no rationalization to Sims or trustee Dora King, the story reviews. He raised his fist as trustees completed a vote. Sims then requested Carey whether or not he had a remark, and he replied, “No, I’m simply … white energy.”
In accordance with King, Carey “stated he didn’t even understand it was popping out of his mouth.” King and Sims stated the remark appeared unrelated to something occurring on the assembly.
King informed MLive.com that the comment was out of character for Carey. Sims, who’s Black, provided an analogous evaluation.
“Leo has been good to me,” Sims informed the publication. “To see him exit like this hurts.”
Sims and King stated noise and acoustics prevented them from listening to precisely what Carey stated on the time, and the assembly continued. Sims reviewed the assembly video after a resident complained.
Carey didn’t instantly reply to an ABA Journal e mail and voicemail requesting remark. The State Bar of Michigan website reviews that the Flint, Michigan, lawyer was admitted to the bar in 1985.
